Promising Signs as Ropes Push Step 5 Opposition in Pre-Season Opener
Bridon Ropes FC began their pre-season schedule with an encouraging display against higher-tier Haywards Heath Town, narrowly falling to a 1-0 defeat in a competitive and fast-paced contest at the Meridian Sports Club.
Facing a well-established Step 5 outfit, the Ropes showed no signs of early rust, adopting a confident, possession-based approach that caught the eye. Playing out from the back with assurance and combining it with well-timed direct play, Bridon took the game to their opponents and more than held their own throughout the opening 45 minutes.
The best chance of the first half fell to winger Patrick Da Lomba, who was a constant threat down the left. His superbly delivered cross midway through the half picked out a teammate in the box, only for the header to be gratefully held by the Haywards Heath goalkeeper. It was a let-off for the visitors and a moment that might have given Bridon a deserved lead going into the break.
Half-Time: Bridon Ropes 0–0 Haywards Heath Town
The second half began with Haywards Heath stepping up their tempo, enjoying a stronger spell of possession and testing Bridon’s trialist goalkeeper, who responded with a string of sharp saves to keep the scores level.
As both sides introduced fresh legs, the flow of the game shifted. Bridon’s rhythm dipped slightly with the changes, and Haywards Heath took full advantage with just under ten minutes remaining. A well-worked move saw the ball break loose inside the area, and the visitors fired home a low strike from ten yards that proved to be the decisive moment.
Despite the result, there were plenty of positives to take from the Ropes’ performance. Against tough opposition from a division above, Bridon showed composure, energy, and flashes of attacking quality—encouraging signs as preparations continue ahead of the new season.
